Fall 2012 Horizon Grant Takes Lew Wallace ES Students Around the World
Students in the LWES gifted program read the Jules Verne classic and prepared a global experience to be shared by the entire school. The multi-disciplinary project-based experience included reading and discussing the novel and researching places Phineas Fogg and Passepartout visited on their 1872 journey.

May's Innovation Award Goes to Eubank Librarian

“Hip Hip Hooray for Terri Gaussoin.”

The staff at Eubank Elementary cheered for the school’s librarian this week after learning that she had won the May TIG/APS Education Foundation Innovation Award for educators using technology in creative ways.

Gaussoin was described as “transformational” and praised by Principal Christy Sigmon and co-workers for revitalizing the library, making it inviting and exciting for students.

“Thank you for what you do. Please keep it up. You inspire us,” said Jim Lujan, account executive for the Technology Integration Group, as he presented a $100 check to Gaussoin.

Not only did she receive a little spending money, but as the Innovation Award winner, Gaussoin gets $2,500 to spend on a variety of ActivClassroom interactive tools or training to assist in the use of Promethean Boards for education.

TIG has partnered with the Foundation to create the Innovation Award that will be presented monthly during the school year to a district teacher who is advancing education in the classroom through the use of technology, including Promethean Boards.

“I love kids. I love to teach. I love reading. And I’m a technology nut,” said Gaussoin. “My Promethean Board is my right hand. I can’t teach without it.”

Gaussoin has received national recognition for her efforts in integrating technology in education. She will be presenting with Zuni Elementary School instructional coach Susan Bowdoin this summer at the International Society for Technology in Education conference on using iPads to connect classrooms in different schools. The presentation is titled “Beyond Four Walls.”

The Innovation Award will resume in September and continue through the 2012-13 school year. Educators may nominate themselves or their colleagues for the award. A committee will evaluate the nominations and select the winner, who will be honored at a school presentation.

The Innovation Award is the latest donation to the Foundation from TIG, which is the title sponsor for this year’s A is for Art! fundraiser in September and also is a key sponsor of the Horizon Campaign, the Foundation’s push to raise $1 million in private support for Fine Arts, Middle/High School Activities, Literacy and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) programs throughout the district.
