The deadline for submitting an application for this semester's Horizon Awards is fast approaching. The online application is due next Friday, March 7, for the semi-annual awards sponsored by the APS Education Foundation.

Individuals can earn up to $1,500 and teams up to $5,000 for projects that focus on four areas:

  • Fine Arts
  • Middle and High School Clubs or Activities
  • Literacy
  • STEM (science, technology, engineering, math)

Need help filling out the application? The Foundation has put together a presentation with tips on how to write a winning classroom grant. The presentation outlines six things to consider:

  • Clarity
  • Concise presentation
  • Attention to detail
  • Compelling proposal
  • Innovative classroom practices
  • Impact

Other suggestions for writing a successful grant application include:

  • Convince the reviewer your proposal will make a difference
  • Follow the application directions
  • Get a non-educator's opinion
  • Use spell and grammar checks
  • More is not always better
  • Know your deadline (don't wait until the last minute).
