Marvin Callahan and Karin Medina were recognized by TIG and the APS Education Foundation for starting up the Comanche Backpack Program that makes sure kids don’t go hungry over the weekend.

Normally, the TIG/APS Education Innovation Award goes to teachers who are advancing education through the use of technology. But this month, the award took a twist -- recognizing a couple of school employees who make sure students don't go hungry over the weekend.

Comanche Elementary School Counselor Karin Medina and Teacher Marvin Callahan for starting up the backpack program that makes sure students have something to eat over the the weekend. The program has gotten national recognition (and donations from as far away as Dubai). NBC did a story on the program, and Callahan and his wife were guests on the nationally syndicated Meredith Viera Show.
