Hundreds of Pairs of Socks, Underwear Collected

Employees and the community gave generously to the APS Community Clothing Bank during an undergarment drive at City Centre before the winter break.

More than 400 packages of socks and underwear for students in need were donated to the APS Community Clothing Bank during an undergarment drive last month at City Centre. The drive also brought in more than $1,800 in cash donations that will be used to buy new shoes for students.

"Thanks to all who support the Clothing Bank. Our students truly benefit from their generosity," said APS Volunteer Manager Sonja Martens.

The APS-run Clothing Bank recently announced a partnership with Goodwill Industries of New Mexico to serve twice as many students and provide seasonal outfits.

Beginning this month, students or parents can go to the school counselor, nurse or social work and place an order for new socks, underwear and shoes as well as for a new or slightly used coat. The order will be filled by the Clothing Bank, which will work with schools on getting the items to students.

In addition, students will receive a certificate for three outfits they can pick out at any Goodwill Industries store in Albuquerque. An outfit consists of pants and shirt or a dress.

And, they can repeat this process three times a year.

The Clothing Bank is still accepting gently used clothing, and in fact is making it easier to donate. Donation bins will be located at the Clothing Bank, 1730 University Blvd. SE; the APS administration building, 6400 Uptown Blvd. NE; and Shoes on a Shoestring at Cottonwood Mall.

The Clothing Bank also is accepting cash donations that pay for the new underwear, socks and shoes. Donations may be made to the APS Education Foundation, PO Box 25704, Albuquerque, 87125. They may also be brought to the Foundation’s office at 6400 Uptown NE, Suite 630E, or you may donate online at www.apseducationfoundation.org. Make checks payable to the APS Education Foundation and designated to the APS Community Clothing Bank.
