Highland DECA Teacher Goes Paperless

Debi Cline is this school year's final TIG/APS Education Foundation Innovation award winner.

Debi Cline's marketing classes at Highland High are among the first in the district to go paperless. All students have access to computers, the curriculum is stored on a public data file and students can access materials anywhere on campus.

Her classes also were part of a pilot for the KUNO one-to-one tablets that were assigned to each student, allowing them to complete work for any class at home.

"If they needed internet but did not have it at home, they knew (and still know) how to access free Wi-Fi at the public libraries or at various commercial properties," she said. As a result, she said, students completed more assignments in all of their classes and saw improved grade point averages.

"When we make technological tools available to all students, we can see a direct link to learning," said Cline, this school year's final TIG/APS Education Foundation Innovation award winner.

Cline has been teaching marketing and sponsoring DECA for 28 years, 21 of them at Highland.

Technology Integration Group and the APS Education Foundation sponsor the Innovation Award, which honors a district teacher who is advancing education through the use of technology, including the Promethean ActivBoards.

A monthly $1,600 prize was awarded in 2014-15.
