French Funerals Donates $20,000 to IB Program at Sandia HS

The established Albuquerque business recognizes the value of an academically challenging world-class program.

French Funerals & Cremations is a believer in the potential of Sandia High School’s International Baccalaureate program. That’s why the company has committed $20,000 to the advancement of IB for 2015-16.

The donation was announced this week by APS Education Foundation Executive Director Phill Casaus and will be presented at an upcoming Board of Education meeting.

“French Funerals is recognized throughout the community as being one of Albuquerque’s most philanthropic organizations, and we are grateful it took a look at Sandia’s IB program,” Casaus said. “Students and teachers are committed to seeing the program not only take root as a great options for kids who seek world-class rigor, but watching it grow over time.”

French President and CEO Tom Antram, Chairman Duffy Swan and Executive Officer Manager Susan Broersma recently were recognized at a Sandia High staff meeting and talked to teachers, administrators and support personnel about their belief in the students in the program.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is designed as an academically challenging and balanced program of education with final examinations that prepare students for success at the university level and beyond. The program is taught over two years and has gained recognition and respect from the world’s leading universities. IB Diploma students study six academic areas over two years in which they are awarded points. Students complete assessment tasks in the classroom, which are scored by their teachers, and then moderated by IB. Additionally, students take written examinations at the end of the program, which are marked by external IB examiners.

Courses in the IB Diploma Program at Sandia stress depth over breadth in learning and develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. Because students are required to accept more responsibility and accountability for their education, the Diploma Program will have students exceptionally well prepared to succeed at the university level.
