Foundation Ranked Among Nation's Best for 3rd Straight Year

The APS Education Foundation is one of only two K-12 education foundations in the nation ranked in the top 25 for three consecutive years.

The nation’s only annual study and ranking of K-12 education foundations has ranked Albuquerque Public Schools Education Foundation 18th in the nation, the third consecutive year the Foundation has ranked in the top 20.

The study, "Stepping Up: The Nation's Top K-12 Education Foundations" includes education foundations in 200 of the country's largest school districts (by student population) as well as other top-performing foundations in smaller school districts.

The APS Education Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization established for promoting private support of the district and its students. In partnership with Albuquerque Public Schools, the Foundation promotes and garners financial and in-kind resources to provide students with the opportunity to succeed. It also mobilizes resources and develops community partnerships to support excellence in APS.

“I can’t say enough about our Foundation, which provides much-needed support for Albuquerque Public Schools," said Superintendent Raquel Reedy. "Congratulations to Executive Director Shannon Barnhill and her staff for this national recognition. They have more than earned it.”

Since 2010, the APS Education Foundation has put more than $1 million directly into classrooms through APS. So far this year, the Foundation has awarded more than $100,000 in Horizon Grants for innovative fine arts, STEM and literacy projects; $60,000 in Achieve Awards to 21 clubs and activities; $75,000 in Success Awards to three schools for academic projects and $50,000 in Guhl Literacy Awards to two elementary schools.

In the spring, the Foundation will host its second annual Gold Bar Gala celebrating some of the district's best students, teachers and contributors to public education.

Stepping Up looks at eight key performance categories to determine the foundation ranking:

  • annual revenues
  • revenues per student
  • total assets
  • assets per student
  • investment income
  • total program expenses
  • expenses per student
  • human capital (volunteers).

“The industry continues to grow, with the study’s more than 200 foundations holding more than one-half billion in assets and raising almost $400 million,” said Dewey Caruthers, study author and president of The Caruthers Institute that conducts the study, noting “top-performing K-12 education foundations are most often led by the top local business, community and education leaders."
