Foundation Funds Mid-School Projects

Students at Grant, Kennedy, Tony Hillerman and John Adams will benefit from large-scale projects aimed at keeping students engaged and productive.

The APS Education Foundation doesn’t think middle schools should have the Jan Brady Syndrome.

Toward that end, the Foundation is funding large-scale projects at Grant, Kennedy, Tony Hillerman and John Adams middle schools with more than $37,000 for the 2015-16 school year.

A large portion of the funding came through the Foundation’s Walmart Blue Sky grant, targeted at vital projects that keep students engaged and productive. The Foundation’s Disbursement Committee also allocated discretionary funding to better fund these projects, which range from an incentives-based program at Kennedy to a lunchtime tutoring program for students at Grant.

“Middle schools often suffer because they sometimes don’t get the attention of high schools and elementary schools,” said Foundation Executive Director Phill Casaus. “But our board is very aware of the needs of middle schools, and of the district’s efforts to improve them. But we couldn’t do any of it without community support – both from Walmart and through efforts such as the district’s employee United Way campaign, in which donors give directly to the Foundation.”

More than 1,800 middle school students will be helped in this effort.

The Blue Sky grant is an annual grant to APS middle schools and has already provided more than $60,000 in the past several years.
