Fall 2012 Horizon Grant Takes Lew Wallace ES Students Around the World
Students in the LWES gifted program read the Jules Verne classic and prepared a global experience to be shared by the entire school. The multi-disciplinary project-based experience included reading and discussing the novel and researching places Phineas Fogg and Passepartout visited on their 1872 journey.

At Dolores Gonzales Elementary School, volunteers shelved new English and Spanish books and third graders read poetry about being helpful and incredible citizens. At Griegos Elementary School, students used new iPads to explore the worldwide web and an associate superintendent recalled how her passion for literacy was sparked by Chilly Willy comic books.

It was a Celebration of Literacy at two Albuquerque Public Schools elementary libraries sponsored by the APS Education Foundation and in honor of PNM and other business partners who contributed more than $50,000 in cash and in-kind services for the makeovers.

PNM and the APS Education Foundation came together earlier this year to initiate the literacy makeovers. Working in concert with administrators at both schools as well as APS Capital Master Plan, Library Services and Maintenance and Operations, the Foundation began creating a tangible gift that would change the look of both libraries as well as enhance and update the services they offered.

PNM donated $35,000 for the personalized renovations. The Foundation Board of Directors, through the Guhl Literacy Endowment, donated $5,000. Other donors include New Mexico School Products, Contract Associates of New Mexico and Technology Integration Group.

The literacy makeovers, which were customized for the two schools, included:  

  • At Dolores Gonzales: a Spanish/English collection, new reading nook, furniture, storage and a new Promethean electronic whiteboard
  • At Griegos: 30 iPads with a synchronization cart plus a new TV, rug, beanbag chairs and new flooring and paint.

“PNM has been a long-time supporter of literacy programs in schools like Dolores Gonzales and Griegos. We really believe literacy is the foundation of future success,” said Ron Darnell, PNM senior vice president and member of the APS Education Foundation Board of Directors. “PNM believes deeply in the children of Albuquerque and New Mexico and is glad to be a part of these projects.”

Raquel Reedy, associate superintendent for elementary schools, recalled at the Griegos celebration how her childhood elementary school didn’t even have a library, so she read comic books in the grocery store. “That was my only opportunity to read something that wasn’t boring because at my school there was no PNM, TIG, Contract Associates of New Mexico or New Mexico School Products. We were alone. But the fact is we can’t do it alone. Businesses realize that and they want to help us.”

Other guests at the two celebrations on Friday, Aug. 31, included Diane Harrison Ogawa, executive director of the PNM Resources Foundation; Lorenzo Garcia and Analee Maestas, members of the APS Board of Education; Phill Casaus, executive director of the APS Education Foundation; Diane Kerschen, APS superintendent for elementary education and several representatives of APS departments and the two schools.
