APS Education Foundation expands its grant opportunities through Broader Horizons.
The APS Education Foundation is expanding its Horizon Campaign with a new name and a bigger mission. It’s called Broader Horizons.
The effort aims to put more money into classrooms throughout the school district on a variety of levels, said Foundation Executive Director Phill Casaus.
The Horizon Campaign, which began in 2010, was extremely successful. But we want to grow – keeping our key focal points but also looking to benefit the district in other ways.
Horizon Awards, grants targeted to STEM, Literacy and Fine Arts classrooms, will still be available. But a variety of other funding opportunities, including larger block grants available to entire schools, are available.
Wells Fargo Brighter Horizons Financial Literacy Grant
Established by Wells Fargo, the grant funds requests for classes that work to address financial literacy. Money available in 2014-15 is $22,000.The granting window will likely open for a month in September
Opened in the spring of 2014, Achieve augments school-sponsored student activities at the club and after-school level, with the purpose of keeping students engaged and in school. There are two funding cycles for Achieve: September and January. A group may not apply for more than $10,000. Money available: $30,000 in each cycle, $60,000 for the year.
The oldest and largest granting opportunity the Foundation provides, Horizon Awards support ideas with impact in three key areas: STEM, Fine Arts and Literacy. Grants are limited to $1,500 for single classrooms and $5,000 for team approaches. There are two funding cycles within Horizon – one in September-October and the other in February-March. Money available: $85,000 in each cycle., $170,000 in 2014-2015.
A new project this year, Success intends to fund an innovative school-level program that advances student achievement.Multiple schools or departments may be awarded, and the Foundation reserves the right to fund one submission up to $20,000, with an option for other years. Money available: $30,000 in 2014-15.
Student members of the Foundation Board of Directors help direct funding toward a key need each spring. The annual grant is for $15,000, with applications due in March.
Walmart Blue Sky Grant
Established in 2014, Blue Sky intends to increase engagement in middle schools through a block grant of $15,000, in hopes of helping principals fund a key need in their school. Potential targets could be increasing engagement within the school community or easing students’ transition into or out of middle school. The grant window will open in March-April.
Depending on the level of request, the Foundation executive director, the Disbursement Committee and the full board may fund requests. Most of these funds are reserved to rapidly address unplanned needs or requests that fall outside other granting opportunities. They are not intended to fund requests that were unmet through other grant opportunities from the Foundation. Money available in 2014-15: $62,000.
