Artist, Poet Book Sales to Benefit APS Foundation

Angus Macpherson to Appear at Second Annual A is for Art! on Sept. 9

Artist Angus Macpherson got his start at Wilson Junior High and Highland High Schools.

Noted Albuquerque painter and poet Angus Macpherson is coming full circle.

After getting his start in Albuquerque Public Schools more than 40 years ago, Macpherson will be the featured artist at the 2011 A is for Art! gala auction, Sept. 9 from 6-9 p.m. at the Albuquerque Museum.

“To have an artist of Angus’ caliber and generosity is really a coup for the event,” said Foundation Executive Director Phill Casaus. “We’re just thrilled.”

Macpherson will be donating the proceeds from the sale of two of his books -- “Paintings and Poems” and “A Good  Mystery, the art of Angus Macpherson” – at the fundraiser, which benefits the APS Fine Arts Department and the Foundation. More than 180 pieces of APS student art will be sold at the show, with the artists receiving 40 percent from the sale.

Macpherson Mystery
Macpherson's book will be sold at the A is for Art! gala and auction, with proceeds going to the APS Education Foundation to support APS Fine Arts programs.

Macpherson credits his long career in art to the start he received in public schools, particularly at Wilson Middle School (then Wilson Junior High) and later at Highland High, from which he graduated in 1970. He studied under Frank McCullough, who was the featured artist at last year’s event.

“It started for me at APS,” said Macpherson, whose two daughters also are Highland graduates.

The event will include live performances from a variety of APS musical groups throughout the district and refreshments will be provided.

Tickets are $25, $10 for students. Purchase tickets online now, or call the Foundation at 881-0841.
