APS Education Foundation Recognized in National Study

District fund raising arm receives #8 ranking

A recent study of public school district foundations by a Tampa, Fla., based management consulting firm ranked the Albuquerque Public Schools Education Foundation at No. 8 among the 50 largest districts in the country.

The study by Dewey and Associates conducted the study with the purpose of comparing the education funds or foundations in how they support and enhance public education in their districts. Based on districts’ Form 990 filed with the Internal Revenue Service in 2009-10, the firm scored and ranked districts on these categories:

  • Total revenues
  • Revenues per student
  • Total assets
  • Assets per student
  • Total program expenses
  • Program expenses per student
  • Investment income
  • Total volunteers.

The study listed APS as the 29th-largest district in the country. APSEF ranked at the top of the list in investment income, third in assets per student and fourth in revenue per student.

“Our board of community members, with the help of our friends at APS, has done a wonderful job of moving the Foundation forward,” said Foundation Board of Directors President Cristy Carbon-Gaul. “In the past two years, we’ve launched a great A is for Art! fundraiser, created a Horizon Awards program that touches thousands of students and strengthened our ties in the community. We’re proud of the Foundation, but mostly because we’re a reflection of the great kids we serve.”

APSEF ranked behind four foundations in Florida—Pinellas Education Foundation was No. 1—as well as Denver, Las Vegas, Nev., and New York. However, it scored higher than larger districts in Chicago, Philadelphia and Dallas.
