APS Education Foundation Announces 2012 Selfless Seniors

27 High School Students Recognized for Giving Back to Society

The Albuquerque Public Schools Education Foundation has selected the fifth class of Selfless Seniors, each with a record of helping in their community with little or no recognition.

The 27 students chosen as 2012 Selfless Seniors are serious about their futures, yet find ways to put others before themselves. They maintain a GPA of at least 2.0 and are in good standing in terms of attendance and behavior at APS comprehensive or alternative high schools. But more importantly, they’ve had a positive impact on the lives of others and have characters that set them apart.

Thanks to Albuquerque photographer Frank Frost and Wells Fargo Bank, they will be honored in the spring at a ceremony that draws hundreds of friends, family and school peers.

They are students like:

  • Annahi Munoz of Atrisco Heritage Academy who advocates for ending child homelessness
  • Claire Tritz of Albuquerque High who spent two months helping the needy in rural Panama
  • Cameron Christiansen of Cibola who presents a sportsmanship award to the opposing basketball team at the end of each home game
  • Kyle Stepp of Del Norte who serves as a spokesperson for the New Mexico Children’s Miracle Network following his own battle with bone marrow cancer
  • Skyler Bolles of Eldorado who tutors elementary school students
  • Christopher Harms of La Cueva who serves as a nature guide and assistant teacher at the Albuquerque zoo, aquarium and Botanic Garden
  • Alexia Quezada of Highland who, in addition to her many school activities, is an active volunteer for the Southeast Heights Neighborhood Association
  • Tiffany Thompson of Manzano who volunteers with young children as Quacky, the mascot for the Albuquerque Rotary Club
  • Eli Gail of Rio Grande who, as a leader with the Marine Corps JROTC, helps provide services to veterans
  • Alyssa Ortega of Sandia who works with children with a wide range of disabilities
  • Mary Seibert of Valley who organized her classmates to raise money to help children born with cleft palates
  • Michael Steudle of Volcano Vista who teaches German to middle school students
  • Dominique Marshall of West Mesa who has started a school mentoring program

“These students are representative of the many unsung heroes in our schools,” said Phill Casaus, executive director of the APS Education Foundation. “They encourage and inspire us, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to recognize them and to share their stories.”

This year’s Selfless Seniors were nominated by friends, family, teachers and school staff.

They are:

  • Richard Jojola, Claire Tritz and Sheneille Wilson of Albuquerque High

  • Melissa Conn and Kyle Stepp of Del Norte
  • Skyler Bolles and Erin Hardy of Eldorado
  • Alexia Quezada of Highland
