$50,000 Donation Supports Literacy and Community Mentoring Programs

The donation was made by Alliance Data to the APS Education Foundation to expand programs such as the one at Manzano Mesa Elementary.

Alliance Data card services of Rio Rancho has announced it will donate $50,000 to the APS Education Foundation to support the expansion of literacy and community mentoring projects in the district.

Alliance Data CEO Ed Heffernan made the announcement at a company site meeting attended by several hundred employees in May. A ceremonial check was presented to APS Superintendent Raquel Reedy and Kirsten Sanchez, who headed a successful community mentoring/literacy program at Manzano Mesa Elementary School.

“Alliance Data’s commitment is a wonderful thing for literacy in APS,” Foundation Executive Director Phill Casaus said. “The program at Manzano Mesa has been something to be proud of, and we have high hopes of an expansion to another school so that personalized reading instruction can help children get to grade level more quickly.”

The much-heralded Manzano Mesa program is in its third year and has shown excellent results, using a community-based team of volunteer readers to help students achieve proficiency through one-on-one reading time. The program, which was one of four Best in Class awardees at the Foundation’s Gold Bar Gala in April, pairs with instruction children already receive during regular classroom time.
