$1M+ in 2 Years! Foundation Puts Money into Schools

APS Education Foundation grants totaled more than half a million dollars last school year, helping 34,000 students.

The APS Education Foundation is coming off the best year in its 22-year history, but there’s more to come.

The Foundation announced that its grant programs affected more than 34,000 Albuquerque Public Schools students in 2016-17, with awards totaling $534,000. In the past two fiscal years, the nonprofit has delivered more than $1 million to classroom and school projects in the district.

“We’re very proud of how far we’ve come and in the ways our grants affect learning,” said Executive Director Phill Casaus. “But in no way are we satisfied. There’s still plenty to do.”

Though school is just in its first week, the Foundation has already opened two large grant windows – the Guhl Literacy Awards for pre-K through 5th grade literacy, and the Success Awards, a large grant opportunity for schoolwide academic projects.

The opportunities don’t end there.  The first window of Achieve Awards – grants for clubs and activities –  opens on Aug. 28.  On the same day, the popular Horizon grant program also will open for individual and team projects in STEM, Fine Arts and Literacy.

Casaus said the Foundation experienced a record year in individual and corporate giving, and is planning a concerted internal effort this fall through its annual employee giving campaign through the United Way. An online campaign is the newest feature, and should make giving easier and more secure.

“APS employees are a big reason we’ve had success,” Casaus said. “Many of our folks understand that by giving to the Foundation, they are helping their neighbor schools – or even a school across town. But that’s the key component of what we try to do – when one school does better, no matter where it is, everyone does better.”
