Tierra Antigua Elementary Receives Success Award for Mobile STEAM Lab

Tierra Antigua Elementary School was the winner in the APS Education Foundation’s highly competitive Success Awards grant, receiving more than $18,000 to fund a mobile STEAM lab.

The lab, which will integrate, science, technology, engineering, art and math, aims to inspire the students at Tierra Antigua and help them become passionate about science and its many intersections with potential career paths.

“The Foundation received 26 proposals from a variety of schools and APS departments and that is by far the most we’ve ever gotten in the Success window,” said Executive Director Phill Casaus. “Like most grant readings, this was a very difficult choice and I didn’t envy the Foundation board members who had to make the decision.”

Tierra Antigua will use technology to help operate robotics lessons, student research and a variety of other STEAM activities. The hope is that student engagement – and thus, attendance – will rise.

This is the second large-scale lab the Foundation has funded in recent years. In 2016, E.G. Ross Elementary School received a $50,000 grant for its highly successful STEALTH lab.
