Horizon Campaign

The Horizon Campaign is an APS Education Foundation effort to raise $1 million in private funding from the community, and your help has helped make a difference for our students!

A drop became a ripple.

A ripple begat a wave.

A wave touches every part of the city, and helps thousands of children.

In the past 18 months,  APS Education Foundation’s Horizon Awards have poured nearly a quarter-million dollars back into the classrooms of the state’s largest district, touching students at every level and positively affecting four key areas within Albuquerque Public Schools: Fine Arts, Middle/High School Activities, Literacy and Science/Technology/Engineering/Math.

“I am so grateful for my Horizon grant,” said Albuquerque High teacher Diane Baca. “It allowed me to bring relevance and fun into my classroom.”

The community has made this possible, contributing more than $800,000 in cash and in-kind services toward Horizon.

Key corporate backers, including Intel, Lockheed Martin/Sandia National Labs, Wells Fargo and Technology Integration Group have helped make this possible, but just as important are small and medium-sized local businesses who believe enterprising teachers and students should have a chance to fully explore the contours of education.

How innovative are these Horizon-funded teachers? Get ready for a fun ride.

-- At Sandia High School, teacher Adolphus Washington helped his students devise and build biofueled and electric cars.

-- At East San Jose Elementary School, fine arts coaches helped pre-kindergarten children learn the basics of music so they’ll be better prepared to enter school.

-- Students from throughout the district came together to perform at Festival de Bellas Artes, a Horizon-funded show that honors students’ backgrounds and diverse cultures.

-- At Atrisco Heritage Academy High School, teachers used new technology to better teach students the concepts of calculus, a key stepping stone to college preparedness.

-- At Bel-Air Elementary, students who need just a little more help to read proficiently were able to get the attention they need.

 Those are just five of more than 70 examples of Horizon projects that make a difference every day. The Foundation uses two funding cycles per year, with recipients selected by members of the Foundation board of directors and outside community members. Teachers may apply for grants of $1,500 in a single classroom and $5,000 on a team approach. In all, nearly 11,000 students have been part of a Horizon project.
