They come from the South Valley and Northeast Heights, Paradise Hills and Martineztown, Four Hills and North Valley. They paint, sculpt, sing, dance.

They are stars and winners. But most of all, they’ve got talent.

Welcome to the APS Education Foundation’s A is for Art! celebration on Sept. 9 at the Albuquerque Museum.

The event was the hit of the school year in its debut a year ago, drawing more than 400 people to the museum for wonderful food, incredible art and live performances that illustrate just how much Fine Arts means to the city and Albuquerque Public Schools.

A is for Art! features live and silent auctions of student artwork from the annual APS Metro Youth Art Exhibit – a professionally juried show of high school student artwork in a variety of media.

Students will receive a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of their work, with the remainder going toward the Foundation’s efforts to support the district’s Fine Arts program. Art from well-known local artists, including nationally recognized painter Angus Macpherson, will be included in the auction as well.

Technology Integration Group again has agreed to be a title sponsor of the event. Other Albuquerque-area businesses also will help sponsor the event. All students who have art in the show will receive compensation for their work.

And, for the first time, attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase art made by APS teachers, whose influence is key to thousands of students throughout the district.

Finding a 21st century masterpiece won’t be hard – A is for Art! has twice as many pieces this year, and the quality of the artwork is incredible, said APS Education Foundation Director Phill Casaus.

“When people tell me about the ‘good old days’ of education, I always like to respond: ‘These are the good old days,’” he said. “Kids today are being asked to perform at a much higher level than their parents did when they were in high school. And, I think A is for Art! is living proof. Our kids are producing high-quality work – work that helps benefit their educational skills – every day.”

Quick fact: Sponsorships for the event are available, beginning at $500 and going up to $10,000.

Tickets: $25 for adults, $10 for students. Purchase yours at the door tonight.
