Zuni ES Hosts a Night of Discovery for APS Teachers, Families

Teachers and families from throughout the district showed up to experiment with hands-on digital learning tools.

Albuquerque Public Schools and Discovery Education sponsored a Digital Open House for teachers and families on Nov. 8, providing a glimpse into how digital education is transforming classrooms. Guests were encouraged to experiment with digital tools during hands-on sessions, students showed off what they've been learning, and parents learned strategies for digital learning at home.

APS educators and representatives from Discovery Education along with students who are already using Discovery in their classrooms provided information, demonstrations and guidance on how digital media and technology are being used to enhance learning.

The open house featured a series of subject-focused breakout sessions including:

Language Arts

Visitors learned the parts of speech through games, songs and videos and also completed a digital madlib.

This session explored shapes that form the foundation of things within the world and -- through digital overviews, games and videos -- helped participants learn and create a geometry tutorial.

Social Studies

Visitors watched history come to life through digital images, speeches and video, stepping back in time and reporting the events in the Discovery Education Studio.

There were several science-related activities including one that explored the concepts of how air pressure and the properties of water come together; another that looked at how birds adapt based on their food source; and a third that explored the concept of chemical reactions with a fun, hands-on activity that used fizz, foam and flames to show how a solid and a liquid can be combined to fill a balloon.

Zuni students showcased projects and assignments they have completed using Discovery Education resources.

APS has partnered with Discovery Education to take science, social studies and health education into the 21st century by using digital tools that address Common Core State Standards, ignite student curiosity and enhance learning.
