The Behavior Redirection Program is an adaptation of the traditional "time-out" model, asking students to consider questions like:

  • What happened?
  • What should have been happening?
  • What will you do differently next time?

The Behavior Redirection Program is currently running in 21 schools throughout the district.

Behavior Redirection

The Redirection Program works in conjunction with existing school and classroom behavior management plans. It provides support for students who are in need of more specific planning for appropriate behavior.

  • Redirection is an inclusive practice available to every student K - 5, including those students receiving Special Education services.
  • Redirection is not punitive; instead the focus is to provide the student with clear, logical alternatives, or choices, that can affect positive changes in the student’s behavior.
Behavior Redirection is:
  • Positive
  • Supportive
Behavior Redirection is not:
  • Counseling
  • Punishment

The Behavior Redirection Program:

  • Provides immediate and consistent interventions
  • Intervenes early in the behavior cycle
  • Shortens the time that the student is out of the classroom
  • Provides a structured format which helps the student investigate their ineffective behaviors
  • Helps the student focus on positive choices
  • Returns the student to the classroom, as soon as possible, with positive choices that enable learning to occur

Redirectors

Redirectors are specially trained Educational Assistants who help the student break down their behavior into manageable and observable steps. The student is then sent back to class with a written plan in hand that outlines steps for improved behavior.

Redirection is an early step in behavior management prior to needing intervention by a certified staff member or administration.

How Behavior Redirection Works

  1. A student exhibits inappropriate behavior.
  2. The student is referred to redirector using Referral form.
  3. A redirector meets with student.
  4. The student’s behavior is discussed and explored.
  5. A Student Behavior Plan form is completed and signed.
  6. The student returns to classroom with a copy of the Student Behavior Plan form.
  7. The redirector enters this in their Log.
