APS Breaks Ground on new Valley High School PE Facility

$12.4 million project will be completed in March 2017

Students, APS Board members turn shovels as construction starts on Valley PE facility

Albuquerque Public Schools has started construction on a new 22,904-square-foot physical education facility at Valley High School.

District officials and members of the award-winning Valley Vikettes dance team gathered to celebrate the start of construction this morning.

The Valley project includes an new weight room, a new dance room, new boys and girls locker rooms, as well as renovation of some 43,000-square-feet of space that currently houses the locker rooms, training room and wrestling room.

“These new facilities will enhance the PE programs at the school for students,” said Valley High Principal Anthony Griego.

The project has an estimated cost of $12.4 million and is expected to be completed in March 2017. Valley High was opened in 1955 and currently serves 1,155 students in grades 9-12.

“We are committed to serving these students, and all students in the district, with learning facilities that are up-to-date and provide the best environment for teachers and students,” Hendrickson added.

Funding for the project was approved by voters in the 2013 G.O. Bond election.

“These new facilities are for the students and their learning,” APS Board of Education Member Lorenzo Garcia said. “The improvements to this school and at schools throughout Albuquerque would not be possible without the continued support of the community.”

APS Board of Education member Dr. David Peercy echoed Muller Aragon’s remarks. “As a community we need to support our schools and our students and we are so thankful that the voters have done so,” Peercy said.

Huitt Zollars architects designed the project and Bradbury Stamm  is the general contractor.
