Summer School for Middle Schoolers

Summer middle school intervention classes are designed to help 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students who are struggling with mandated tests in math and reading literacy.

Eligibility

The APS summer middle school Literacy and Math intervention program is based on a student’s district benchmark test scores and attendance during the regular school year. The APS summer middle school intervention program is aimed at helping the student get back on track to be better prepared for the next school year. Only current APS middle school students are eligible to attend summer middle school and bus transportation is not provided.

We are excited to invite eligible APS students to participate in summer middle school offerings to help them reach their goals. Teachers of the summer intervention programs are highly qualified in either language arts or math.

Summer middle school magnet sites are:

• Garfield Middle School — students who attend Garfield, Taft, or Taylor.
• Grant Middle School — students who attend Grant, Jackson, Kennedy, or Roosevelt.
• Jefferson Middle School — students who attend Jefferson, Washington, or Wilson (western part of boundary)
• Hayes — students who attend Hayes, Van Buren, or Wilson (eastern part of boundary)
• Harrison Middle School — students who attend Harrison, Ernie Pyle, or Polk.
• McKinley Middle School — students who attend McKinley, Cleveland, Desert Ridge, Eisenhower, Hoover, or Madison.
• Tony Hillerman Middle School — students who attend, Tony Hillerman, James Monroe, or Lyndon B. Johnson.
• Truman Middle School — students who attend Truman, Jimmy Carter, or John Adams.

The Summer Middle School Principal or a Summer Middle School Teacher will confirm your student’s eligibility by May 18, 2012. Your child will attend summer middle school from 8:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. each day. Students are assigned to classes based on their testing results. Students work on the skills that they specifically need to learn.

Because attendance is so important to students’ success, please plan vacations, activities, and appointments around summer middle school dates (June 13 to July 11, 2012) and times (8:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.) for four weeks. Students will be dis-enrolled after their second absence. In addition, four (4) tardies are equal to one (s) absence.

Students must be recommended by their school through the Academic Improvement Plan (AIP) process to qualify for the program.  Please contact your school for more information.

Courses

Dates: Wednesday, June 13 to Wednesday, July 11

The program consists of  twenty (20) days in two periods daily:

• 1st Period: 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
• 2nd Period: 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Students only needing one class (either math or reading literacy) are required to attend summer school for both periods daily. Students will receive an additional two-hour class in their struggling subject area.

Note: Transportation is not provided to summer school campuses.
