Salaries & Benefits

A look at how much of the APS operational budget goes toward salaries and benefits.

90% of the APS operational budget (about $535 million) goes to salaries and benefits for 10,500 employees (another 1,700 APS employees are paid through other funding sources).

Of that, 95% (more than $509 million) goes to school personnel.

About $25 million (less than 5%) of the budget goes to pay for personnel who perform duties away from the school including human resources, internal audit, technology and payroll.

The breakdown of funding for employees is as follows:

  • 71% pays for teachers and educational assistants.
  • 11% pays for school counselors, nurses and special education support.
  • 7% pays for maintenance workers such as school custodians and repair crew.
  • 5% pays for school administration including principals, assistant principals, secretaries, clerks and bookkeepers.
  • 3% pays for central services and administration such as payroll, human resources and technology.
  • Less than 2% pays for central academic support such as Instruction & Accountability, Curriculum & Assessment, Language & Cultural Equity and Library Media Services.
  • 1% pays for librarians.
  • Less than 1% pays for central administration.
