9th Annual Dia de Los Ninos y Libros Celebration

The APS After School Programs Unit hosted their 9th annual Dia de Los Ninos y Libros event, celebrating literacy and the wellness of our students.

On April 23rd, the APS After School Programs Unit hosted their 9th annual Dia de Los Ninos y Libros event, celebrating literacy and the wellness of our students. Over 350 students, family members, staff and partners were in attendance at the event hosted at Highland High School. Students from Harrison, Van Buren and Wilson middle schools as well as Kirtland and Whittier elementary schools engaged in a safe and fun learning environment with an array of academic enrichment activities.  Activity booths allowed students to learn and experiment with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math and Literacy offerings.

Key highlights at this event included an awards presentation to families participating in the Families Reading Together program who read a total of 6,950 minutes, as well as to Panda Express for their generous support in providing meals for everyone in attendance. Students from several of the after school programs showcased educational skits and Lion Dancers from UNM completed the afternoon with a cultural storytelling dance. One of the students’ favorite elements was that each of them left the event with a book of their choice to continue the celebration of literacy.
