15th Annual Lights on After School

Lights on After School initiative brings awareness to the need for and positive impact of after school programs.

In October, after-school programs and stakeholders from across the nation will be celebrating the 15th annual Lights On After School. This initiative brings awareness to the need for and positive impact of after school programs and how they support students on many different levels.

On October 1st, the APS School Board recognized several local organizations who provide services through 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) after-school programs.  The 21st CCLC grant initiative was developed by Congress as a NCLB strategy to provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours, particularly for students who attend high-poverty and low performing schools.  The programs help students meet state standards in core subjects, offer a broad array of academic enrichment activities to support whole child development, and offer educational services and family engagement strategies to families of participating students.

There are currently twenty-three (21st CCLC) school sites throughout the district.  They play a critical role in supporting student achievement, both during school and outside the classroom. Last year, teachers in these schools noted that 88% of participating students had improved behavior, 90% got along better with their peers, and 91% showed an improvement in completion of homework.
