Kindergarten Observation Tool (KOT)

The Kindergarten Observation Tool is a state mandated assessment that APS will be administering in the 2017-2018 School Year to assess students as they enter kindergarten.

K-3 Plus:

  • All K3+ teachers will administer KOT during the K3+ window (25 instructional days).
  • Students who attend 20 out of the 25 K3+ instructional days should have a complete record of final ratings submitted by K3+ teacher.
  • Beginning of year teachers may not override K3+ final ratings, but may enter final ratings for incomplete indicators.

General Guidelines:

  • The KOT must be implemented within the first 30 instructional days.
  • The KOT should be implemented for students who have entered the classroom within the first 15 instructional days.
  • Students who attend 24 out of the 30 instructional days from the beginning of the school year should have a complete record of final ratings submitted.

* If a teacher has not yet received a login confirmation, they can still begin observations and record data on the Quick Look Recording Sheets available on the NMPED website without a login required.  Go to:  http://ped.state.nm.us/ped/LiteracyEarlyChildhoodEd_KOT_teachers.html

If they can’t login, check that all kinder students are entered into Synergy.  PED will not issue a teacher a login until their class roster has been fully entered and uploaded.

**Teachers should begin to enter data throughout the observation period and should NOT wait until the end of the entry period to enter data.  The bulk of data collected on each student will require a significant amount of time for entry into the system.  Waiting until the end may result in incomplete data uploads.

Please contact assessment@aps.edu for additional questions.
