West Mesa High School Students Tour the Hospitality Industry
by Jana Murphy (April 2008)
Students from West Mesa High School participated in a day-long tour of three business establishments on the Westside. The first stop was the Whisque Mesquite Grill and Bar located at 4201 Montano Blvd NW. Store Manager Heather Thomas gave a thorough and interesting tour of the restaurant, kitchen, stock area and banquet rooms. She then answered questions from the students, including experience needed, wages, types of jobs and benefits.
The next stop was St. Clair Winery at 901 Rio Grande Blvd NW. The students were greeted at the door by Manager John Furbush and escorted to the dining room where they sampled delicious entrees prepared by the chef. General Manager Kevin Jakel gave a history of the winery and information on employment opportunities and educational requirements needed to work in the industry. He also answered questions posed by the students. Students and staff were then given a tour of the restaurant and patio by the very hospitable winery staff.
The final stop was the grand Embassy Suites located at 1000 Woodward Drive N.E. Ms. Tabitha Stallworth, Sales and Catering Administrative Assistant, greeted the group and escorted them to a long table in the Cyprus Grille Cafe. The students were then welcomed by General Manager Mark Gundlach and served a lovely lunch in the atrium with its vast array of plants and glass elevators. Students then toured the many different departments within the hotel with the first being the kitchen (brownies and chocolate dipped strawberries!) and were offered a chef’s toque (hat) to wear or take along. Chef Jeff J. Berres gave a fun and upbeat discourse on the many jobs within the kitchen area. The students also toured the spa, gym, common areas and lastly visited one of the magnificent suites on the 10th floor.
At each location, the students discovered the potential and actual “job openings”. Many of the students picked up resumes and are planning on applying for part time or summer employment.
The day was a success due to the meticulous planning by Work-Study Teachers Tim Burns, Trent Carruthers and Assistant Frances Bachicha.
