The Visual Impairment Unit provides support to students throughout the district who have been diagnosed as visually impaired or blind. Braille Instruction, orientation and mobility (commonly known as "white cane" instruction), and materials in large print or in auditory format are provided when appropriate. The team also provides consultation services to all of the teachers and support personnel who work with our population on a daily basis.

The district serves approximately 185 students with visual impairments. There are specialized district programs at Zia Elementary, Jefferson Middle School and Albuquerque High School. These programs have on-site teachers of the visually impaired. Itinerant teaching staff provide services to students who attend their home schools assisting with necessary modifications and accommodations.
