Developmental Preschool Programs

The APS Developmental Preschool Programs are federally mandated by I.D.E.A. (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). The programs are funded with federal dollars, operational resources, and grants. Current APS preschool programs are housed in approximately 30 different elementary schools across the district and provide special education services for more than 1,000 children each year.

Children served in this program are initially identified through a Child Find developmental screening at no cost to the families. A multidisciplinary team determines whether the child is eligible for special education as a child with a developmental delay or any of the 13 school-aged special education eligibilities.

Children are placed in the program following an IEP (Individualized Education Program) designed to meet the child’s educational needs. Children who are in the preschool program may receive speech/language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, social work, audiology, school health services, and special transportation. Not all services are provided to all children. Services are based on each child’s needs.

Technical assistance is provided by administrative and support staff. APS developmental preschool staff receives professional development, some instructional materials and supplies, equipment, and curricular guidance from the district preschool staff. Building principals provide the daily supervision and teacher evaluation unless assistance is requested from the preschool support staff.
