Extended School Year (ESY) is a supplemental program designed to provide services to students with disabilities beyond the normal school year. The purpose of ESY is to help students maintain critical skills learned during the school year and to prevent significant regression and lengthy recoupment periods. The main focus of the program is to maintain skills acquired during the regular school year and not to teach new skills.
Not all students who have difficulty acquiring and maintaining skills are eligible for ESY. Eligibility must be determined annually on an individual basis by the IEP Committee.
