GED TESTING

Eligibility

  1. The person has not graduated from high school; and/or
  2. The person's high school class (based on their last class of attendance) has graduated; and/or
  3. The person is a minimum of 17 years of age.
  4. If the person is under 17 years of age, the following conditions must also be met:

School Responsibility

A Waiver of Compulsory Attendance form must be completed and forwarded to the district student services office. (See Exemptions from School Attendance directive.) A consent form completed by the Superintendent or designee recommending testing must be presented to the local GED examiner.

District Responsibility

The Underage Permission for GED Testing form should contain the applicant's birth date, date of withdrawal from school, the reason for testing, date applicant's class will graduate, and signature of the parent or legal guardian.

  1. Students residing at New Mexico juvenile correctional institutions will be permitted to take the GED at a minimum of 15 years of age provided that they receive a recommendation to do so from the authorized correctional official(s). They will receive the diploma when their regular high school class graduates.

Procedure

  1. All requests by 17 year old students to leave school in order to take the GED tests will be referred to Student Services. Prior to such a referral, the students and parents will be counseled concerning APS alternatives, in an effort to keep the student in school.
  2. After a conference with the student and parents, the student must complete the process for exemption from compulsory school attendance.
  3. When the student is exempted from compulsory school attendance, application to take the GED will be reviewed and processed by Student Services.
  4. The student services director will be informed by the local GED examiner of the status of the student recommended for testing within 30 days following the request. If no information is received within 30 days, the district student services director will contact the student and parents to assess the status of the student.
  5. The local GED examiner sends the applicant a report of scores he/she attained on the GED tests.
  6. Upon the successful completion of the GED tests, the local examiner forwards the applicant's scores to the office of the state GED administrator.
  7. New Mexico residents who have passed the GED and whose high school class has graduated will receive their diploma from the State GED office. Only New Mexico residents will receive the New Mexico high school diploma.
