Petroglyph PTA

General Meeting

March 3, 2003

Welcome:          Michelle Maestas, PTA President and teacher, discussed old business.  The Cherrydale Farms Big Party was successful.  Jog-A-Thon will take place March 19-21st. The letters to parents and pledge sheets will be distributed to teachers on Thursday March 7th.  New Mexico PTA convention is April 25th & 26th here in Albuquerque.  Michelle has more information for anyone interested in attending.

Treasurers

Report:              Eric Cole announced that the balance is currently $25,600.00.

Vice President’s

Report:              Kim Cabanas distributed examples of the full-color yearbooks that we have purchased.  This is the final week that she will be accepting pictures.  Class pictures will be taken this Thursday March 6th.

Legislative Report:

Gary Cherniak informed us that the legislature has sent a collective bargaining bill to Governor Richardson.  Full-day Kindergarten and plans to retain and attract teachers are also issues being discussed.

Principals

Report:              Joyce Jaime reported that standardized testing of students started this week.  She also stressed that attendance is a top priority, and that sending ill students to school so they may take healthy absences for vacations is unacceptable.  She is currently sending letters to families when their student has missed 6-8 days of school.

Seven Bar Elementary is projected to have 1,170 students for 2003-04.  Our cluster is currently trying to find ways to lighten the load there.  This may mean more students here at Petroglyph next year.

EPSS:                Ms. Jaime and Petroglyph parent Dr. Nowlin presented the Educational Plan for Student Success.  This plan has four objectives:  literacy, continuous improvement, dropout reduction, and general safety.  They are going to asking for input from our entire learning community during the month of March.  If we feel that a program within our school is important it must be in our plan.  We are unable to spend money on textbooks, books, software, science kits etc., unless it is outlined in our EPSS.  More information will be coming home with students about this process and how we may help.

Michelle awarded door prizes that were donated by TGI Fridays.   The next meeting is Monday April 7th, with 3rd grade presentations and a representative from the city councilors office will present information about Westside development.   At 7:45 the meeting was adjourned to the computer lab for the 4th grade presentation.
