President’s Report

Sam Sims reported that several volunteers assisted with photo day, that efforts to finalize a budget for the 2009-10 PTA year would be reported on tonight, and that plans for the Jog-a-thon would also be discussed.

Principal’s Report

Theresa Fullerton thanked the PTA and teachers for a smooth transition into the new school year. She wanted to celebrate the A.Y.P. results but also be cognizant of continued need to remain diligent in teaching efforts and strategies. She was pleased that Onate was one of few schools who had met A.Y.P. standards two tears in a row. She emphasized Onate’s goal of reaching 100 % in participation in reading and math portions of A.Y.P. testing in 2014.

Instructional Coach’s Report

Anissa Chavez gave a power point presentation on A.Y.P. results. She stated that Onate had improvement in scores for both reading and math by all student grades. She had comparison scores for participation and achievement for different grades for the past years. She passed on teachers’ and her questions of 1) How to encourage parents to use reading and math strategies 2) How to bring volunteers into the Book Room 3) How to encourage understanding of importance of attendance during A.Y.P. testing.  She described that the Book Room has books and other materials that have been found to help with improving reading skills.

Sam Sims asked if it would be helpful to send out a note encouraging volunteers for the Book Room and Anissa Chavez agreed to be the contact person for volunteers for the Book Room.

Anissa stated that there are several testing windows coming up including A2L for 1-5 grades in Math and grades 3-5 in Reading and DRA testing for grades 1-2 and also Kindergarten assessments.

Anissa talked about a new school goal of incorporating non-fiction writing into the curriculum 3-4 X a week
