Onate Developmental
ChildFind Program The Onate Developmental ChildFind Program is especially designed to serve the needs of preschool students identified with a disability. The program consists of one certified special education teacher, two educational assistants, one speech and language pathologist, one occupational therapist, and one physical therapist. These professionals work as a team to meet the needs of the students enrolled through the Child Find Process. Our program is an integral part of the Onate Community and is regularly serviced with PE, Library, Music, and Art. Peer models are an important part of the program and therefore are selected carefully to ensure success for everyone involved. Who is a peer model? Peer models are children not identified as having a disability whom are selected to participate as a typical developing preschooler in our program. Peer models exhibit very strong language, social and motor skills. How old are peer models? Peer models range from ages 3 1/2 to 5 years old. Why do we have peer models? Children that consistently demonstrate strong language, motor and social skills are desired to help provide peer interaction and social motivation for preschoolers with disabilities. What are hours and cost? As of the 2005-2006 school year, peer models attend 10 hours per week in either an AM or PM session but not both. The cost is $40 per month given in gift cards from local retailers. Can a placement be terminated? Yes. If the preschool program enrollment is reached and the class is full, the preschool team will determine the best course of action for all the children with the primary focus on enrolled APS students identified with a disability. Another reason a placement can end is when concerns arise and cannot be resolved with assistance from parents and it is in the best interest of the entire program. There is a 2-4 week trial period to help determine if the placement is a good fit. Is my child enrolled as an APS student? No. However, you are required to complete registration documents for your child's concern and safety. Shot records are also required. How can I request for my child to be a peer model? Please contact the ChildFind program at 291-6819 x130. Please leave your name, your child's name, child's DOB, and any contact phone numbers. Please allow up to five school days for a return phone call. Thank you for your interest in Onate's Developmental ChildFind Program.
