LIBRARY MISSION
To ensure every APS student has access to a school
library with a current, high quality book and media collection, state of
the art technology, excellent library facility, top-notch professional
and paraprofessional library staffing, and an outstanding library program.
LAVALAND LIBRARY PROGRAM

Lavaland has a library media center. The primary use of the space is for literacy enhancement. Lavaland classrooms normally go to the library once a week for book checkout. Classes may come in for additional time for research or special projects, as time permits. The library utilizes a number of different types of lessons to help promote book usage.
The school library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. The media program is integrated into the school's curriculum. If a classroom teacher wishes to have a specific lesson covered during library time please see the library assistant to get the lesson scheduled.
The library media staff will provide professional development for all staff and students regarding new learning technologies. Students and Staff will receive lessons on how to use the Athena media management system.
Classroom teachers are expected to remain with the classes during library time. It is very helpful when the teacher helps students choose books as the libraian assistant is doing the book check in and check out. Students really respond to suggestions about different types of books when suggested by an adult. If your class has an educational assistant, please also bring the assistant to the library. Classes that have an assistant usually require additional help and we are grateful when there are several adults to help students.
Staff may check out books for classroom use and personal use. Please have a particular place in the room where you keep library materials. This helps to avoid loss of materials. If you checkout a large number of books to use with students on a particular project it is vital to maintain control of those books. For the past two years, we have seen a significant loss of books when allowed to go home for projects. It is better to have the students check the books out in their own name for project use. This can be done even if it goes over the "book limit". Talk to the librarian assistant for special circumstances.
The library staff holds two book fairs per year. The money/books raised by doing this is used to purchase books for the book room, special items for use in the library, replace books lost by student and not paid for. We appreciate the support received from the Lavaland staff.
Students must have a permission slip signed by parents to check out a book. Students who do not return their book must wait until the book is returned or paid for to check out another book.
PARENTS
Parents can also come to the library and set up an account
to check out books. The library staff encourages this to help promote
reading at home. If
you have a parent that might be interested please send
them to the library for setup on the Aethna computer system.
LITERACY DAY
This year the library staff will sponsor and coordinate
a Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss Day on March 1. This will be done to help
promote literacy and reading enjoyment. Details will be published
in February 2002.
