DUTY for STAFF MEMBERS

It is legally imperative that you cover your duty promtly. Be on the playground 2-3 minutes early.  If you are absent, please make sure your sub knows that you have duty.  Please list your duty boldly in your lesson plans.  If your position does not require a sub, please arrange to for a "Duty Buddy" that will cover you while you are gone.  Please notify the office of your duty buddy.  If you give your class an early recess or an extra recess, you are responsible to be on duty with the class until the schduled duty person arrives.

Please wear your orange vest, while on duty, so students and parents can pick you out easily.  If you need a orange vest please let the office know.  Staff is expected to walk their assigned duty area.  Please split up the playground area with the other duty teachers.  Please circulate the entire duty area continuously.  It is not appropriate for staff to stand together unless there is a safety situation that needs to be discussed.  Staff needs to be scanning the area for dangerous situations.  If students are interrupting your ability to scan or walk the area, please explain that you are on duty and need to continue your duty.  Please scan the fence and perimter as often as possible.  Think of yourselves as lifeguards at all times.

Please make sure that students are following the playground safety rules.  If you see students that are not following the rules it is your legal responsibility to correct the situation.  Each classroom teacher is expected to go over the playground rules in detail with the class.  Please review classroom rules daily for the first three weeks, every nine weeks at a minimum, thereafter.  If your class is having problems please review the playground safety rules more often.  If we all cooperate in teaching and enforcing the rules then our time spent on duty will go more smoothly.

Food is not allowed on the playground.  Students need to eat in the cafeteria.  If it is food that they have bought from home please ask them to eat it in the cafeteria or talk to their teacher.
