SCREENING: GIFTED
The School Assistance Team (SAT) is responsible
for ordering screening materials. Test protocols and screening measures
will not be provided by the Gifted Resource Center or APS Special Education
Department.
Obtain a current Harcourt Educational Measurement
Catalog from The Psychological Corporation (1-800-225-5425). Refer to the
list at the bottom of this section or on pages 48-49 in the APS Gifted
Handbook for suggested screening measures.
Every APS elementary and middle school
was provided a Naglieri Noverbal Ability Test (NNAT) packet of screening
materials. According to the National Association for Gifted Children, this
current test provides a culture-fair and language-free means of determining
students’ nonverbal reasoning and problem-solving ability, regardless of
educational or cultural background.

Best practices recommend:
-
Use a variety of measures to document student
strengths both in and out of school. As score on one screening measure
may not always give enough information to the evaluation specialist.
-
Refer to GT Handbook page 47. The list
includes eight categories of characteristics of gifted students and suggestions
for documenting strengths.
-
At the elementary level, many teachers
are using the KOI, Kingore Observational Inventory. It successfully increases
the opportunities to identify difficult to find children by recording characteristics.
Products from activities can be used as documentation of characteristics
of giftedness and serves as an instructional focus.

Create a data base: Start collecting data
from the students you are screening.
Include gender, age, factors that
may affect performance, month screened/tested, scores, etc. Keep the data
so you can compare it to the final evaluation report. This data will give
you information about which tests, both screening and IQ, work best with
your school population.
