Gifted students require a
curriculum that is differentiated to meet their unique needs. In addition,
teachers of the gifted must continually adapt, create, enhance or otherwise
modify materials to reinforce the curriculum while meeting the IEP needs of the
students. In order to facilitate this responsibility the teacher of the gifted
needs to access material from a variety of sources. Purchased materials (such

The processes used to teach curriculum need to be differentiated as well. A unit that is effective one year may not be appropriate the following year, depending on the individualized needs of the students. Remember, the program must fit the individual student. The student does not fit an existing program.

The National Association for Gifted
Children’s program standards delineate Professional Development as a core
area: Gifted learners are entitled to be served by professionals who have
specialized preparation in gifted education, expertise in appropriate
differentiated content and instructional methods, involvement in ongoing
professional development, and who posses exemplary personal and professional
traits.
