What happens if my child is not identified as gifted? Part of the Multi-discipline Team (MDT) meeting should include a discussion of recommendations from the evaluation specialist and/or other team members for interventions or opportunities that could be provided in the general education classroom. Your child’s information is referred back to the Student Assistance Team (SAT).
What if I have had my child privately evaluated for gifted services? If you child is new to our district, you will need to register him/her at the school in the general education program. You should then work with your classroom teacher on the rest of the process. APS has a private testing committee that will review the testing should your child be referred for evaluation. "What do I do when I am coming from out of state?"
If services for gifted students is provided through special education in your current state, make sure your child’s evaluation and Individualized Education Plan (IEP) are current. Students coming in from out-of-district schools with an IEP are eligible for services based on that IEP. APS will evaluate your child through the programs and services on the IEP and may, at a later date, meet with you to revise the IEP.
If the services your child received are not within the special education department in your current district, you will need to register your child at his/her home school (or transfer school if you have requested and been approved for one) and then work with your child’s teacher on the process. (Link: GT Handbook p. 30 (Flowchart))
The more information you can provide APS about your child’s educational program and current achievement the better. It will facilitate our working with you to provide appropriate services.
"What do I do when I am entering APS
from a private or home school
setting?"
You will need to register your child at your home school (or transfer school if you have requested and been approved for one) and then work with your child’s classroom teacher on the process. (Link: GT Handbook p. 30 Flowchart)
What happens if my child exits APS and wants to returns at a later date?"
There are two possible answers to this question. If your child was in a gifted programs and has current testing information in his/her permanent file when you return to APS, he/she will have an MDT to determine need for gifted services and an IEP to design the instructional program..
If your child’s testing is more than three years old, you should work with your school’s evaluation specialist to initiate the process for retesting and determining continued need for gifted services.
In both instances, any information you can provide from teachers and schools where your child has been attending would greatly facilitate the process.
