PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Original Dennis Chavez Elementary School building was constructed in 1978. As the building has received little by way of addition over the years, for the most part its present configurations still reflects the floor plan at its inception. The Architectural firm of Greer Stafford /SJCF, Inc. Designed the Additions that are currently under construction.
This 26,500 square foot addition consists of 7 Kindergarten Classrooms, 8 regular classrooms, kitchen additions and remodeling to the cafeteria, student restroom and administration wing. The School site will get a new student pickup and drop off lane and staff parking will be increased. The playground will also receive improvements and some new equipment.
The Kindergarten Classrooms have the following Architectural features. Useable wall space and delighting within each classroom will both be maximized through the use of clerestory windows installed above the tack board height and below suspended ceilings around the perimeter of each suite. These high windows will introduce ample daylight while leaving the majority of useable wall surfaces free for display and instruction use.
The Architects used the opportunity to design a cohesive façade. With the additions they covered a majority of the existing buildings accessed from the playground. Visually they created a playful yet productive addition. At the entries into the buildings they created accent towers so the teachers can instruct their class to meet at a certain tower after recess. Another special feature presented to the Design assistance committee that was embraced was to create a soft landscape area in- between the two new wings.
