EDWARD GONZALES DUAL
LANGUAGE PROGRAM
The
goals of the program at Edward Gonzales state that the children will:
á
Develop
bilingualism and bi-literacy in Spanish and English.
á
Achieve
proficiency in all academic subjects, meeting or exceeding APS guidelines.
á
Develop
an appreciation for both languages and cultures affirming the identity and
self-worth of each student, their families and their community.
There
are tremendous advantages to being both bilingual and bi-literate. National research shows that benefits
include:
á
Positive
effects on intellectual growth and enriched cognitive abilities (thinking
power).
á
Improved
understanding of native language.
á
Students
develop a head start in language requirements for high school and college.
á
Increased
job opportunities in many careers where knowledge of a second language is an
asset.
The
dual language program is a voluntary program and requires a parent signature
which demonstrates your commitment to support your child in his/her effort to
become bilingual and biliterate in English and Spanish. If this decision is right for your
child and family, ask to sign a commitment form.
