Owl Pellets
Some Chelwood students recently did a project with dissecting owl pellets. For those of you who have never heard
of an owl pellet, it is just another term for owl droppings. The students were all divided
into pairs and given an owl pellet to carefully dissect. At first the students feel it is
a pretty gross thing to do, but soon that goes away and the students are amazed at what
they find. The average owl pellet contained 3 rodent skulls and numerous bones. The
students were given a chart to help them identify the bones and to see how much of the
skeleton they could put back together. It is fascinating to work on and the
students were excited to share their bones with one another.
The following pictures were taken while the students were
working to dissect their pellets. Notice how intently they are involved in this.
