Student Mediators Make a Difference
Chelwood is committed to having a safe school and teaching students how to solve
their own problems. One of the key components to this is the Student Mediator
Program. During every recess, 4th and 5th grade students work in teams to help
solve problems on the playground. These students volunteer their time and have
made a great difference at our school.
Before students can become a Mediator, they are required to go through a full day
of training. Every 4th grade student in the school is trained in conflict resolution
and how to discuss a problem utilizing “I” statements. The students are not allowed
to say “You did this”, but instead use “I felt” when they are discussing the conflict.
The Mediators are specially trained to facilitate this discussion and work toward a
solution. Any of our 4th and 5th grade students who have been through this
training can volunteer to be a Mediator.
We are really proud of this program and feel that it has made a big difference at
Chelwood. These problem solving skills are something that students can develop and
utilize throughout their lives. It also supports our Character Counts Program and
helps to develop these characteristics.
Thanks to all of our Student Mediators and the sponsors of this program for their
hard work and dedication.
