Intramurals at Chelwood
At Chelwood, we try to offer a variety of activities to keep the students active and
involved. Our PE Coach, Mrs. Booth, is in charge of an intramurals program that
meets during the lunch recess. Any student in 4th or 5th grade is encouraged to sign
up for the different sports. The intramurals program has a strong focus on
sportsmanship and many of the Character Counts Traits. It has been a highly
successful program with around 200 students participating in each of the sports
offered.
The year begins with flag football. Both boys and girls are out on the field and the
games are fun to watch. Next comes soccer season. 6 soccer fields are drawn with
chalk and each lunch recess has 6 games going on at once. After soccer is indoor
floor hockey during the cold winter months. This is a face paced game which
requires a lot of skill and stamina. The year usually concludes with a game called
Omnikin. This is like an indoor volleyball game without a net. The teams are made
up of 4 players and 3 teams are on the floor at one time. The goal is to keep a huge
ball from hitting the floor. The Omnikin ball is about 6 feet across and takes three
players to hold it up while the 4th team member serves it. This is a fun game which
Mrs. Booth found two years ago and has become very popular with the students.
At the end of each of these intramural sports, the championship team or a team
made up of the all-stars plays against the staff. This has been a fun way to conclude
each of the sports and is a lot of fun to watch. The games are usually close and both
the staff and students really look forward to it.
Below are some pictures from one of our flag football games.

Going for the extra point.
