From the Principal's Desk
Cecilia MartÌnez-Sanchez
Dear Parents,
The staff at Barcelona continues their focus on student achievement and quality instruction as they receive ongoing training and feedback from experts who are trainers in helping schools improve their delivery of instruction in the classroom. Our teachers have been working closely with our Baldrige consultant, Mrs. Denise Woody. Each grade level has developed a grade level plan to improve and increase student achievement in the various content areas of spelling, math, reading, science, social studies, and the writing process. Each grade level has targeted a specific area in need of improvement, and have developed specific strategies to use along with ways of assessing the success of students.
In addition, all our classroom teachers have just been involved in our first SFA math visit by trainers from the SFA Foundation. Three trainers spent three days at our school visiting classrooms, meeting with grade levels, and providing training and planning with administration. Their feedback and training will help us move further along with our math goals which focus using our data from the students’ math concept checks to improve our instruction for our students. Our SFA math program is based on the national math standards . These standards are used to prepare our students with math skills that will prepare them for their next grade level as well as support their life long success. In order to insure student success we will be offering after school tutoring in math, reading, and other content areas starting the second nine weeks. In addition we will be offering SFA math and reading workshops in order to create better understanding and support for our students and parents. We will provide specific information on these workshops on our marquee as well as through school flyers in order to keep you involved, and informed. We believe the education of our students must involve a strong partnership with our families, therefore we are committed to making this happen for all of us.
October will bring us additional training in the area
of SFA reading. Trainers and experts in SFA reading will be spending
at least three days visiting classrooms, meeting individual teachers and
providing training for all our certified teachers in order to enhance our
teaching methods and strategies. Each teacher will be developing
a continuous improvement plan for their reading class in order to improve
student achievement. Our trainers will help teachers focus on the
student data from their reading assessment in order to know exactly what
our students need to be successful.
We want to remind you to please refer to the Standards brochure we shared with you during our curriculum nights. The brochure outlines the most important skills for students in order to be fully prepared and successful. Our teachers will be reinforcing our standards’ focus for our school and the district during parent teacher conferences. A core team from our school will be attending a standards’ workshop with the Guru of standards, Doug Reeves, on Monday, September 22, 2003. The core team will then share their new knowledge with their colleagues.
Finally it is important to remind our community that each
school is responsible for implementing their Educational Plan for Student
Success (EPSS). Our EPSS plan focuses on literacy (reading), numeracy
(math), attendance and improving the drop out rate for the cluster.
All our above-mentioned training is aligned to our goals of providing quality
instruction in reading , math, student attendance and keeping students
in school.

Second Grade has started a great year so far we just finished our second unit in math A Second Look at Addition. The children learned various strategies they could use to solve addition problems. We are now starting a unit in math called Data and our Community.
In Science we are engaging the children in a dinosaur unit. The children are learning about different eras, dinosaur characteristics, names and about fossils. The children often do hands on experiments, that allows them to get a feeling for what actually is happening.
In writing all second graders are learning about sentence structure, punctuation and how to create voice and detail in their writing.
We would like to remind parents, that math homework is nightly. Our
homework packets are due every Friday. Please do not forget your child's
read and respond form, which is also nightly.
The second grade staff would like to thank all parents who took the
time out to come to curriculum night. We appreciate your support.
As a lot of you know, we have two first/second grade combo classes in
second grade, due to low enrollment. On Monday, September 22nd, we began
a math rotation for these children, so the grade level standards will be
met for all children in math. The children are adjusting well. Parents,
please be aware, your child will be taught the standards for his/her grade
level. We are going to the zoo on October 2nd, please be looking for
permission slips and details the last week of September. We will be taking
buses.

Fourth grade is a time for exploring the United States of America and the planets within our solar system. For the first nine weeks, we will be studying the moon, sun, and constellations in science and working on mapping skills in Social Studies.
We have begun our initial exploration by looking at the topographical geography of the Earth, primarily the United States, and then transferring out knowledge of these land formations to the moon.
We have also begun examining the branches of government and the Constitution. Fourth grade classes have developed a Vision Statement or purpose for going to school based on the Constitution. We have also applied the functions in the classroom and the school, such as the Peace Path, rules, and job roles, to the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial Branches. We will also begin focusing on New Mexico and the Southwest Region very shortly.
In writing, we are currently working on the writing process, editing
symbols, and teaching the students how to use the 6-Trait Writing Rubric
to develop their writing skills.
In math, we are focusing on Number Sense and Time and Money. Please
work with your child on their addition, subtraction, and multiplication
facts. Students having more practice with their facts have been more
successful on homework and Unit Tests!
The next nine weeks we will be focusing on the Solar System in Science, the Northeast and Southeast Regions of the United States in Social Studies, Multiplication and Division in Math, and a continuation of the writing process using the 6-Trait Rubric.
We would also like to thank the parents who came to Barcelonaís
Curriculum Night for 4th Grade. The combined efforts of parents,
students, and teachers are the driving forces for achieving goals.
We are here to become life-long learners.

Greetings from Ms. Darlingís Language Arts Classroom!
The students are engaged in their first projects for the year. The 8th graders, in fact, just finished theirs around the theme of September 11th. They did a nice job of raising awareness of the anniversary or 9/11 on our campus. In addition to a short speech they gave, they were asked to write a report on life after 9/11 and how our country has changed.
The 7th Graders are busy working on their projects titled “My Community.” For this project the students are asked to look closely at their own South Valley Community. For some, this has been a challenging task, as they have not given prior thought to what makes this part of Albuquerque unique.
The 6th graders are busy preparing their projects titled “My Hero.” They have been asked to choose someone they see as a hero in their own lives. I have emphasized that this must be someone they know personally, not a celebrity of some sort.
As for the other activities taking place in our classroom, we are always busy with spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and looking at different types of writing. Additionally, the students are working daily on writing skills.
We are off to a strong start in each grade but are also acutely aware of the growth areas we need to address in the coming months. As always, I strongly encourage you to keep close tabs on what your child is doing in school. Guidance and support at home is key to success for students.
Mission and Vision Statement
We are here to learn and be model Academy classes.
By being independent thinker the doors to college will be wide open to
us.
In Math the students have been very busy. In our small community of 8th graders, we have explored the Pythagorean theorem and its relationship to a hypotenuse.
Pythagorean Theoremís History...
Many years after the Chinese, in the 5th century B.C., a Greek mathematician,
Pythagoras, and the students in his school studied the 3-4-5 triangle.
they noticed that if they built a square on each of the three sides, the
total area of the two smaller squares was equal to the area of the large
square.
Thus: c2=a2+b2
In their quest to defeat sequences in Math, the 7th graders have discovered a rule in math that they can apply to any arithmetic sequence. They would like to share the formula and challenge our community to try it out.
a+(n-1)d In the expression, a is the first term, d is the common difference, and n is the position in the sequence (A special thanks to Daniel M. for helping the class figure out the definition of the common difference.
Solve: Find the tenth term of the sequence 3.7.11.15...
Remember to keep the joy in learning,
Mrs. Woodley
Our Commitment to you is one of excellence.
We will continue to support, enhance, and enrich the lives of children

Goal Teams!
Effective and Efficient Operations
The Effective and Efficient Operations Goal Team (EEO) was formed this fall. We are ready to begin the work of looking at systems in the school to insure that the work we do is done in the most effective and efficient way possible. Our first major project will be to streamline the duty schedule, and the arrival and dismissal process. Throughout the year we will be reviewing systems and processes using the PDSA cycle and flow charts. We hope that with the work we do our school will continue to improve and run smoothly.
SFA Reading News
Tammy Luna and Michele Grange
We are currently in our first block of SFA Reading.
Children have been placed by their instructional level and are focusing
on skills such as: reading strategies, comprehension, writing skills,
oral language development, etc. We are excited to say that we have
68% of our students reading at grade level or above! Below is the
percentages by grade level:

Every nine week block we hope to raise our percentage 1%. In order to achieve this goal, we need your cooperation and assistance in helping your child(ren) become better readers. You can do this by ensuring that your child reads 20 minutes or more EVERY NIGHT. Please take an interest in listening to your child read and asking them questions to check for comprehension. When it is time for your child to respond, remind them to write their response in complete sentences. Also, encourage them to spell correctly and use correct punctuation. Lastly, be deliberate in signing your childís Read and Respond Form and have them return it daily.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP AND COOPERATION!

SFA MathWings
Monika Ortiz
SFA MathWings is well underway, and our students are excited and engaged in learning new mathematical concepts. SFA MathWings integrates the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Curriculum and Standards and emphasizes problem solving, real world applications and cooperative learning. Communication (both oral and written), mathematical reasoning, and manipulative use are also critical components of SFA MathWings. The curriculum is based on the Constructivist theory of learning where students are actively involved in the daily lesson. Our Barcelona Bobcats are busy in their math classes doing this - constructing their knowledge! SFA MathWings is implemented at Barcelona Elementary School in Kindergarten through 5th Grade. Our students have been learning the routines of SFA MathWings and are doing a great job! Please be aware of the following information regarding SFA MathWings and Homework. Thank you for being a partner in your childís education!
KINDERGARTEN
Home Connections (Homework) are assigned when Active Mini Lessons are taught in class - the first two days of the week.
PRIMARY (1st and 2nd Grade)
Home Connections (Homework) are assigned every day.
INTERMEDIATE (3rd - 5th Grade)
Homework is assigned every day. It consists of 5 skill problems,
5 mixed practice problems, 3 real world problems, and 1 problem-solving
question.
Facts Practice - Students are to practice their facts every night.
They are to recall facts from their Fact Study Sheet as a partner follows
along to check for correctness.
PARENT PEEKS
The Parent Peek is a section on the homework that keeps parents informed of what their children are learning at school so that they can provide help to their children and stay actively involved in their learning.
Please encourage your children to complete their homework and return it to school every day!
Primer Exito
Ana Munoz/Parent Liaison

According to requirements of the EPA Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA 1987), the Board of Education completes mandatory re-inspections on a three year cycle. In addition, surveys are conducted every six months of all buildings within the District. In the past, asbestos was widely used in building construction.
Accredited environmental inspectors visit the school your son/daughter attends to re-inspect the condition of material with asbestos or assumed to contain asbestos and complete a re-inspection survey. The asbestos management plan for your school is filed in the main office of the school and is accessible to parents and staff. You may review the current plan at the school at any time.
Since AHERA was enacted, APS has implemented an Operations and Maintenance Program to train maintenance personnel with proper handling and safe procedures for asbestos containing materials. As EPA has suggested, it is APS’ policy to remove asbestos only when a damaged condition dictates, or maintenance remodeling or demolition is involved. In these instances, precautions are taken to ensure the safety of our staff and students.
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact Katherine Aldaz at 765-5950, extension 259.
