New Mexico is a vast state with many professional artists living in all regions. This state has deep roots in the visual arts and many artists living here and elsewhere use New Mexico as their inspiration.  In order to close the gap, it is recommended that a professional co-op be formed to establish a greater connection and consistent dialogue between the versatile artists doing work connected to the
Land of Enchantment.

INTRODUCTION
You have been asked, along with two other professional artists, to create an artist co-op for the state of New Mexico. Only artists who live in New Mexico or create work inspired by New Mexico can participate. To spark interest and build a cohesive look to your first exhibit you will be asked to organize a show called "Homage to New Mexico". You will have some flexibility chosing your theme or themes if you chose, however the connection to New Mexico must shine through. The exhibit itself will center around either one of the following themes or a combination of the following themes:
1. Homage to Historical/Cultural connections; 2. Political issues; or 3. Environmental issues of New Mexico. The theme(s) you pick are your choice, of course your team will all need to agree as to the final decision.  To finalize the exhibit you will need to create an online exhibit to generate interest to galleries and/or museums so that your exhibit may go beyond virtual space into actual space.

Here are just a few visual examples of each:

TASK
This problem is multi-faceted and this exhibit is a multi-media exhibit. Before you get started you will need become familiar with terms that may be unfamiliar to you.  You will find vocabulary words highlighted throughout this site that will link you to basic definitions in the RESOURCES section however you may want to dig a little deeper to gain a thorough understanding of these terms.

1. THE PROSPECTUS:
To begin  you will need to generate interest to other professional artists to participate in this first exhibit.  In order to do so you will research artists working with one, or several of these themes and put out an invitiational "call" to these artists. This will keep the quality of the art work at a high level. Remember you will also be required to include a piece of your own work based on the theme you have chosen.

2. RESEARCH:
You will need to do individual research to find professional artists working within one of these themes. You will each need to find no less than 4 artists working within your chosen theme(s).  As you locate your artists you will need to include background information about the artist and their process.

3. WEB DESIGN AS COMMUNICATION AND EXHIBITION
Finding and affording gallery space is always a concern. Keeping an "open" connection with the other artists in the co-op is also vital while keeping all costs low.  As the organizing members of the co-op you will need to make this exhibit web accessible as your strategy to keep members connected, costs to a minimum, and to market the show towards actual exhibit space as well as virtual.

You should begin by compiling a few vital pieces of information about each artist and you will need to answer a few questions in order to successfully complete the task at hand.
*Name, title of art work, medium (oil, installation, weaving, etc.), size, date
*Describe in detail why this work is a strong example of either historical/cultural, political or environmental art.
*What is the mood of the work in your opinion?
*What was the artist trying to say (what is their message)? (You may find this information via websites or through what you believe the artist was trying to convey).
*What is the "event or inspiration" that may have influenced the artist to be create this work?

PROCESS

To create this exhibit you will work as a cooperative team. However you will each need to share responsibilities towards finalizing tasks.  Each of you will have individual decisions to be made based on your expertise.

1. PROSPECTUS:
The prospectus must include the theme to be defined that you are working with. If you are restricting the medium the artists need to use, you should mention this, as well as any size limitations.  You should discuss how this exhibit
will be seen, when the "opening" is (or in this case when you hope to have it appear online), and how many artists you will be choosing, as well as how many of their pieces.  It might be helpful for you to visit a gallery or two and see if there are any "call for artists" (a prospectus) available for you to see.  If you would like, I can design an example for you to refer to, however, you have creative license and the prospectus will be part of your webpage so enjoy the process!

2. RESEARCH
To begin you will all need to research artists producing work in New Mexico or about New Mexico that are working within your theme(s). Please refer to the RESOURCES link of this site for website links to contemporary artists as well as galleries and museums that you can virtually browse to locate artists. I would suggest that you begin with compiling a list of these artists, images of their work, the medium they produce their work in and information about their process. You should work closely together at this time to be sure you haven't chosen the same artists to research. When you have a list of several artists and their pieces it is time to work on your own.

In order to complete this task you will each need to take on a separate role. Here are your choices; JUROR, HISTORIAN or CURATOR.  If you have less than three people in your team you can either share the third role or if you have more than three people you can add a TASK MASTER role to assist with the distribution of duties.

The individual task of the JUROR will be to create the prospectus/invitiation  and assist with making the final decisions regarding the artists to be included in the exhibit based on established criteria. Only 15 artists including yourselves, will be in the premier exhibit.

The individual task of the HISTORIAN is to compile the research that all of you have done regarding the works significance to historical/cultural, political or environment issues and create the final formal written description of the exhibit.

The individual task of the CURATOR will be to make the final decision regarding web presentation and first venue of the exhibit.

The individual task of the TASK MASTER will be to assist all other team members with their roles by helping them break down their duties as well as becoming a support for whomever may need it.

Note: Remember to write down or copy/paste the URL of the file you take images or passages from because you need
to give credit to all artists, authors and websites incorporated in your final exhibit. URLs must be cited and credited for all sites and graphics you use. Make sure you understand the rules regarding copyright on the Internet.

3. WEB DESIGN AS COMMUNICATION AND EXHIBITION:
Creating an online exhibit may appear to be a daunting task, however, if you have ever copied an image from a website for a report and used it in a power point, hyperstudio or kidpics it is not that different. It's as simple as copy/paste.  In order to plan and execute your final exhibit you will be required to keep detailed notes, ideas, images, etc. to show your process.  You may do this in a small sketchbook, in a working folder on the computer, in a notebook, whichever you are most comfortable with.  Your team can
share your notes/plans or you may keep separate plans and share them as you go.

Remember to give credit to all of your artists that you choose.  Now when it comes to adding your piece to the exhibit you will have a few choices.  If you have access to a digital camera it is quite easy, a scanner will also assist you.  This is when you can ask for your teacher's assistance or you can talk to me online and I will do my best to help.

You have full creative license as to how you want to display your exhibit.  This will be your chance to create your own website (I would suggest Netscape Composer - again ask your teacher or your technology/computer teacher or me.)
