The X-Cal Lab is a Science Computer
Assisted Learning Lab. There are learning modules in Life Science,
Earth Science, Physical Science, and Scientific Reasoning. Grades 2 - 5
work on modules with a partner in one area at a time. They go
through a lesson on the computer, a hands on experiment, complete work
and record data in notebooks, and are assessed on their learning.
Grades K and 1 primarily work with Physical Science. Vocabulary and
basic Science concepts are taught and practiced. Students use the Tac
Tic building materials to build squares, cubes, balanced structures,
simple cars, scooters, strollers, helecopters, airplaines, and more.
They begin exploring with verbal instructions, and move to building
cards with pictoral instructions. Problem solving is built into the
lessons. They conduct simple experiments and collect and graph their
data. Cooperation and teamwork is emphasised.
