Petroglyph Elementary

General PTA Meeting – September 10, 2007

The meeting was brought to order by PTA President, Davine Sanchez.  The meeting was held at 7:00 pm in the school cafeteria.  Approximately 34 individuals were present at the meeting.  Pizza was provided for the meeting by Domino’s, located at 4623 Greene NW.

Several PTA activity booths were setup in the cafeteria.  Everyone was invited to visit the booths after the meeting to gather additional information about PTA.

The 2007 - 2008 Proposed PTA Budget was presented.  Many details of the budget were discussed.  A survey will be circulated asking suggestions on how PTA money should be spent.

It was explained that PTA purchases the agendas for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders and then the students buy them from the PTA.  It was brought up that other school pay of the agendas for the students and that Petroglyph should possibly do the same.  The money allocated for the 5th grade celebration was increased from $300 to $500 to cover the increased cost of gasoline.  It was explained that we do not make a profit from the yearbooks, we sell them at cost.  $9000 has been allotted for playground improvements.  The budget was voted on and passed.

Math Night/Open House will be Wednesday, September 26th.  PTA will be selling pizza and sodas in the cafeteria.  It was discussed that we may also sell Cold Stone Ice Cream, as a fund raiser, during Math Night.

Cindy Davis discussed a proposal that was submitted by Joy Garcia, the former Chorus Teacher. Mrs. Garcia requested that PTA pay for her to teach Chorus.  The proposal was for $16,500 but it is negotiable.  Cindy will discuss the proposal with her and find out what is included in the requested amount and how many hours she will be incurring.  Jamie Benefield said that she might be interested in teaching chorus.  Davine Sanchez will discuss this with Jamie.

Principal George Jackson gave an update regarding the start of the school year.  A letter went home addressing the enrollment at Petroglyph.  The enrollment at Petroglyph was 44 students below what was planned and the largest discrepancy in enrollment is the fourth grade classes.  As a result, one forth grade class will be disbanded and those students will be placed in the other remaining fourth grade classes.  The 20th day of school is September 11th and the budget that Petroglyph receives will be significantly less than planned.  Mr. Jackson provided the breakdown of the current enrollment at Petroglyph:

            Preschool         39 students       3 teachers

            Kindergarten    118 students     7 teachers         ratio 17

            1st grade           127 students     7 teachers         ratio 18

            2nd grade          127 students     6 teachers         ratio 21.2

            3rd grade           118 students     5 teachers         ratio 23.6

            4th grade           121 students     5 teachers         ratio 24.4

            5th grade           129 students     6 teachers         ratio 21.5

Thank you to the Boy Scouts that repainted the United States map on the playground.

A new fence has been installed along the sidewalk, to help keep our students safe.  The request for the fence was made over four years ago.

The meeting was adjourned.  The next PTA meeting will be held November 12, 2007 at 4:00 pm.

Secretary,

Kelly Martin
