 beetle  A beetle we found.

river side close up
We found 10 sugar ants, 2 midge flies, 2 spiders and a beetle.  The temperature outside was 30 C or 88 F.  The soil was 23 C or 72 F.  The soil was dry and sandy.

 Together we'll identify that bug!

Site #2 Rio Grande Nature Center (Wooded Area)

There's a bug in here somewhere!

Some interesting findings under the microscope.

woods
If there are more, we'll find them!

Bugs love the woods!  We found 3 fire ants, 2 small spiders, 2 flies, 1 caterpillar, 2 red ants, a wolf spider, a black ant, a pincher bug and cicada shell (see above).  The air temperature was 31C or 88 F while the soil was 86F.

Site #3 Montgomery Park (lots of grass = not many bugs!)

We had two sites here.  In one we found 8 insects (a fly, a red ant, black ant, 2 gnats, 2 beetles and 1 unknown bug.  The other site was home to one ant and larvae.  The temperature outside was 22 C in the shade and 39.  The soil was dark and moist from being watered.  We found out that grass and plants love to grow there but insects don't like to live there.

Where are the bugs when you want to find them?
Site #4 Empty, Natural Lot
The soil was full of rocks and sand with very little evidence of vegetation.  Plants don't like to grow here, but the insects liked living on this site better.  It was hot (39C or 100 F)!  In one site here we found 32 insects (28 ants, a leaf bug and mosquito).  In the other site we found 15 ants and a grasshopper.  It's hard to count ants because they move so much.
