Hello and welcome to our class for this 2009-2010 school year. This year Mr. Enggass and Mrs. Spacagna are sharing students and specializing in the two major core subject areas.  Mr. Enggass will be the Math teacher and Mrs. Spacagna will be in charge of Literacy.  Students will stay with their “homeroom” teacher in the morning and change classes for the other subject in the afternoon.

Nightly Reading- Please read every night for at least 20 minutes. Parents should sign each night in their child’s agenda that they read.  Students should write the name of their book, the author’s name, and the number of minutes that they read.  Please check to be sure your kids are reading books at the appropriate level.  It’s a good idea to have your child read a page aloud to you and then retell what they read.  If they make several errors or can’t summarize their reading, they probably need to choose a book that is a better fit.

Nightly Writing- Nightly writing will begin after a few weeks. The format will mirror what we’ve been doing with kids in class.  Kids will have a week to write to an assigned topic.  Over the course of the week, they will need to:

1.Think about the assigned topic and make a plan for writing.

2.Write a first draft.  There is no required length, but at least half a page is a good goal.

3.Proofread and revise their first draft.

4.Write a final copy that is their best work.

Parents, please do not proofread your child’s writing for them, but feel free to help them with the process.  All parts should be done in composition books and are due Friday.

Multiplication facts-  Parents, please help your child learn (memorize!) all their multiplication facts.  These are a basis for much of the math they will do all this year and beyond.
